In the Battle of Tarawa (November 20-12, 1943) during World War II (1939-45), the
U.S. began its Central Pacific Campaign against Japan by seizing the heavily fortified,
Japanese-held island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll now know as Kiribati.

Elder & Sister Needham, our ITEP couple in Kiribati
Elder & Sister Belshe took their active duty marine son to the "red beach" to
show him the location of this battle. It was very low tide and with some diligence
and patience they found a clump of 28 bullets in the sand. Brass and lead won't deteriorate
and a small amount of crusting has taken place after 75 years.
They gifted one bullet to Elder Holbrook which he will hold dear in memory of the
5,000 US Marines who died in that battle
An incredible sense of patriotic appreciation was ours as we viewed the Big Guns,
the Red Beach and the Memorial.
